No\u00e9mi Kiss<\/b> (born in 1974 in G\u00f6d\u00f6ll\u0151) is a Hungarian writer, whose works have been translated into English, German, Polish, Bulgarian, Romanian and Serbian. The German press considers Kiss as one of the most promising writers of her generation. She is a columnist for the German weekly Die Zeit<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Kiss studied Comparative literature, Sociology and Hungarian Studies University of Konstanz in Germany, and also at the University of Miskolc in Hungary, where she has been a lecturer since 2000. She received her PhD from the University of Miskolc in 2003 for a dissertation on Paul Celan, published with the title Hat\u00e1rhelyzetek. Paul Celan k\u00f6lt\u00e9szete \u00e9s magyar recepci\u00f3ja<\/i> (Borderline cases: Paul Celan\u2019s poetry and its Hungarian reception). Kiss regularly publishes short stories, and fictional travelogues on Eastern Europe, and essays on photography and literature.<\/p>\n

Kiss often attends international literature festivals, among others in Berlin, Graz, Hamburg, Krems, Timi\u0219oara, Ruse. In 2009 she was a fellow at the Literarisches Colloquium<\/i> in Berlin and in 2013\/2014, she was writer-in-residence in Zurich.<\/p>\n

No\u00e9mi Kiss was born near Budapest, and belongs to the top-level literary voices of her generation. In her work, she is uncompromisingly addressing the topics that are still rarely talked about in public, for example the social construction of gender, unpleasant sides of motherhood, etc. She is also tackling burning social issues such as domestic violence, being stigmatized due to barrenness, and woman\u2019s attitude towards her own body in her novel Sov\u00e1ny angyalok<\/em> (Thin Angels, 2015), the excerpt of which is published in this anthology. Kiss studied comparative literature, sociology, and Hungarian language at the University of Constance in Germany and the University of Miskolc, where she obtained her PhD for a dissertation on the reception of Paul Celan\u2019s poetry in Hungary, while today she is lecturer. She is the author of several works of fiction, to mention just the latest: short story collection Ikeranya<\/em> (Mother of Twins, 2013) about experiencing motherhood, essays on photography and literature Fotogr\u00e1fia \u00e9s irodalom<\/em> (Photography and Literature, 2011), a collection of fictitious-biographic travel diary short stories Rongyos \u00e9kszerdoboz<\/em> (The Tattered Jewel Box, 2009) about travelling around Hungary, Romania, Ukraine, and Serbia. Her works have been translated to several languages and she is a regular guest of literature festivals in Hungary as well as abroad.<\/p>\n

Kiss is a mother of twins, a boy and a girl born in 2010. Kiss currently resides in Budapest with her family.<\/p>\n
